A rose by any other name?

Debra Allcock Tyler, Chief Executive, Directory of Social Change, has written an article on the substantial difference between charities and social enterprises. She comments, "a problem arises when a charity calls itself a social enterprise. There is a clear definition between a registered charity which works with volunteers, raises funds through donations and grants, has charitable objects and is run by a board of volunteer trustees, and a profit-making enterprise ... Online assistance to beat economic blues

A new website has been launched to help third sector groups overcome the recession.
Umbrella organisation the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations (ACEVO) has unveiled their Recession Support portal in a bid to provide groups with the practical advice and guidance they need to emerge through the economic downturn. The website, which is free to use and also available to non-members of ACEVO, includes various guides written by a range of experts covering key topics such as finance, management and career development. New fund manager for social enterprise scheme

A consortium led by Futurebuilders England has secured a contract to deliver the Department of Health’s £100 million Social Enterprise Investment Fund (SEIF).
Starting from June, Futurebuilders and Partnerships UK will work closely with the Department to support and assess applications, as well as manage the programme’s investments.

Building a modern future for the third sector

A key strand of the Government’s £42.5 million recession package for the third sector will open to applications next month. Futurebuilders and Capacitybuilders have been tasked with delivering the £16.5 million Modernisation Fund that was outlined last month as part of the “Real Help for Communities” action plan. From early April, Futurebuilders will invite bids to the first strand of the fund from larger charities, social enterprises and community groups with a turnover of £750,000 or more. For the full story, click on the following link:
